R. Verlon Owens, 85, passed away at Consulate Health Care at 10:30 am on Tuesday April 16, 2013.
He was the only child of Rufus A. and Willie "Bill" Maynard Owens. Verlon was born in Everglades City, Florida on April 27, 1927 and raised in Panama City and Apalachicola Florida. While attending F.S.U., he met Sylvia Anne Moor, the only child of Ruth and Dan Moor of Tallahassee. Verlon and Sylvia were married on February 14, 1953. A few months later, Verlon was drafted into the U.S. Navy for two years and served aboard the USS Albany. After his service to his country, Verlon returned to Tallahassee where he managed vending machines for Tropicana Products.
Verlon and Sylvia had 3 children, Wesley Verlon, born November 16, 1953; Kay Lynn, born May 13, 1956; and Laura Ellen, born June 9, 1959. Kay Lynn Hill predeceased her father on February 25, 2001.
Survivors are his loving wife Sylvia; his son, Rev. Wesley Owens, wife Rhonda and grandchildren, Jacob and Emily of O'Fallon, Mo.; his daughter, Laura Owens of Albany Ga.; his son-in-law, Nelson Hill and grandchildren, Ashley of Tallahassee, Adam and great granddaughter, Kayla of Crawfordville, Fl.; and his aunt, Ernestine Richardson of Pavo, Georgia and her three children.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Friday the 19th at Culley's Funeral Home on Riggins Road, with a graveside service Saturday morning the 20th at Tallahassee Memory Gardens at 10:00 am. ,The family asks that in lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to John Wesley United Methodist Church, 1689 Old St. Augustine Road, Tallahassee FL. 32301.
