Paula M. Field, a lifelong resident of Tallahassee, passed away peacefully at her beloved home on July 6th. Paula was born and raised in Quebradillas, Puerto Rico. She attended college at University of Florida where she majored in Foreign Languages and met her husband, Harper Field. Upon graduation they moved to Tallahassee where she went for her Master’s Degree in Spanish at FSU graduating Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa.
After graduation she began her 50 year teaching career teaching Spanish at Blessed Sacrament/Trinity Catholic School, Richards High and Leon High School from where she retired. She used to say she felt like “she taught Spanish to every kid in town” over the years and loved each and every one of them, happy to make a difference in their lives.
Paula involved herself in Tallahassee’s community with activities including volunteer hostess at the Governor’s Mansion; designing floral arrangements at the Women’s Garden Club; attending teas at the Ladies Auxiliary Military Officer’s Association of America; member of Springtime Tallahassee along with co-founding the “Springtime Belles” and hosting luncheons for Spanish women from around the world for the North Florida Hispanic Association. She still found time to travel the world extensively with her husband and of course Paula could always be found “swinging to the beat” at the Town Club dances.
During Christmas time annually, Paula opened up her beautiful Spanish home on Live Oak Plantation Road to her many friends and family to welcome in the holiday season. The 2 story villa glittered with holiday spirit, a unique and original Christmas tree in every room. Friends long remember the “coquito”, Puerto Rican eggnog.
Paula is survived by her husband Harper; daughters Vanessa, Laura, and Kay; granddaughters Genevieve and Rachel; grandson Race; and great-granddaughter Katalina. She was predeceased by her granddaughter, Tara who is waiting for her Nana in Heaven. A private family burial was held on July 11th. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made to Big Bend Hospice.
