Two years without you, dear friend, and I still miss talking with you and hearing about all that you were involved with.  It’s amazing how many times you come to mind.  Just walking through the neighborhood where we spent the late ‘60s-‘70s  enjoying all that Chicago had to offer, brings up so many good memories.   I admired the way you went full force into whatever job or task you undertook.  You  made sure to give it your all and leave your mark no matter how hard you had to work.  I feel privileged to  have know you  and won’t forget you.

Dear Aunt Pat,

What a crazy wonderful aunt you were! You were a character we could always count on to bring the life to the party and you knew how to lighten the mood and make most anyone laugh. I admire the strength and tenacity you showed at every stage of your life, never letting someone tell you it wasn’t possible to achieve a goal you had set out to accomplish. Your ability to see through the differences in us and remember that love is what brings us together is something I will bring with me through my whole life. I thank you for loving unconditionally, for showing us what it means to fight for your passions, and for being true to yourself.

I'll never forget your warm heart and your laugh.  There are so many memories that I'll cherish, but two that I want to share.  One is when you came to Malawi to visit me with mom and dad.  I'm so glad you could come.  It was truly an incredible trip: the safari to Zambia, the trip to Nyika Plateu, the night in my village when you cried after realizing that the proud rooster I had just shown you would be our dinner.  Looking through the pictures of that trip makes me truly happy.

The other is the night we took you to the Met.  Since I moved to New York, you had told me that your mother would listen to the opera on the radio every Sunday and that it had been your life long dream to go ever since.  I'm so glad, then, that we finally went for your birthday the last time you were here.  We saw Thais.  You said you loved it.  I went again the day you died.  It was Lucia di Lammermoor.  It was beautiful.  I wish you could have been there.

To be sure I didn’t see eye to eye with Path on everything. We didn’t completely agree on politics and she made me mad at times - but we also agreed on a lot. Work hard and pursue things you love. Most importantly love your family and have faith in God.
 
It is hard to believe Pat is no longer with us but she is where she wants to be. She lived her life in the way she felt God wanted her to live it, what she felt He wanted her to do.
 
My minister always ends his services with a benediction. One of his benedictions goes something like - "the worst thing is never the last thing, the last word is never the final word, the last word always comes from God and that word is eternal peace". I thought I needed to share this with Pat the last couple of times I visited with her. But looking back at it I don't think I did. I believe I have gotten to know Pat better in her death and though I’ve always respected but not fully understand the benediction, Pat did understand it completely. She was anticipating her eternal peace. To summarize what others have shared of her in her last days – I’ve heard both my brother Nik and my Aunt Rami say she died gracefully and she wasn't afraid. I personally never saw her cry and she wasn't regretful. When I was with her she took the medical information head on, she never looked at me once for comfort nor did she ever glance my way. 
 
It is Pat's faithful heart that I want to be sure my children know and understand. Regardless of what life throws your way, walk as Jesus did and give it your best. One of Pat's favorite things to say was 'Oh I am just putting one foot in front of another". I can't remember what specifically she was going through when she said this but it exemplifies her faith and the plan God had for her. Yes we all have goals and ambition and we want to control the outcome of the next task - but at times we cannot control everything. Again Pat knew this.

Aunt Pat,
Thank you for immediately welcoming me into your family. No judgement, just unconditional love. I felt it every time we greeted each other with your sincere, warm hugs . You have passed this gift to you nephews and now to their children. The world is a better place because of your unconditional love and faithfulness to your family and God.
I will miss your energy, love, strength, beauty, and gift to bring humor into any situation. Few encompass all of these traits, and you did. I'm so thankful our paths crossed.

I will be forever grateful to you for the sincere and amazing way that you welcomed me into your family while I was dating Brett.  I respect you for the way that you broke barriers for women as a young professional, always acted according to what you believed was right, and prioritized your family over all else.  Family get-togethers will not be the same with you. You will be greatly missed.  Know that you hold a special place in the hearts of my sons, who loved spending time with you. Dear Pat
I have known you as long as I can remember.  You were there for birthday parties, basketball games, graduations, my wedding to Christina, and the births of Benjamin and Nicholas.  You have been an integral part of my life and I can't believe that you are gone.  
I hope that participating in my life has been as rewarding to you as having you in my life has been to me.  
I will miss you always.

Pat you have been a vital part of the Williams family since Lynn and I married. You have been a force in our lives which has contributed hugely to our raising of Brett, Graham and Nikolaus. Your support and influence on them as they were growing up was considerable. They and I had misgivings about some of the paths you took whether in politics or business but we always appreciated the skill, the style and the determination you brought to your many initiatives. I think you know it was clear at the end, in the last weeks, how much you meant to them. And I want you to know that also applies to me.
Checking some of the photos we have of us together in the last six months – Thanksgiving in New York and Christmas in Dayton – you look so well. I just hope you felt the same way. These and all the others photos taken over the years will give us an abundance of happy memories of our time with you.
I had always thought that you, Lynn and I we could spend more time together in retirement travelling and maybe doing some of our bucket list stuff. That wasn’t to be. As you might say it was not what the Lord wanted. Hopefully though He will let us all be together again someday.

Pat, my sister, my dearest friend, I miss you and will always do so.  Watching Claire and Eleanor and Benjamin and Nicholas, I know I will never again have that closeness with anyone else that we shared with each other.  The times we had together from early on are now memories of another time.
I do not know what the Lord has in store for me for the future, but I look forward to seeing you again in true joy with our Lord Jesus Christ.  Love you always,

Pat was a woman who loved her family and supported us no matter what. She broke stereotypes and stood up for what she believed in even when she was standing alone. You had to admire her spirit even as she butted you in the head. I am grateful you are at peace. You were loved and will be missed. Thank you for your love and support. So many people will fondly remember your kindness and love. 

Hi Pat,
I miss you. It is hard to believe that you are really gone from this planet. I will never forget the last week of your life in the hospital and Hospice. You were so true to who you were and you faced death with peace and dignity. We can all learn from you on that one. Your political views drove me crazy and so much worse. What happened????? None of that is important now. What is important is to hold you in the light and remember you for who you were, an incredibly loving human being, who had a strong sense of family and a person who questioned and looked for answers. You were motivated by cause and you were loyal beyond reproach. Can we ask for more from ourselves?

I met Pat in June of 1980. My parents had arranged a job for me in Chicago, as I finished my spring semester of college. I will always remember walking into the offices on that first day and there stood Pat. Tall, beautiful, elegant, and super smart. I was fascinated by her. I was 20, and curious about the World, and she was this super cool articulate business ~ political ~ spiritual ~ practical woman who could eat an entire meal and still have her lipstick look perfect. I was amazed. She could talk to anyone about anything, and type like crazy. She could understand complicated business contracts and trade in the Futures Markets, as well as make many mundane tasks look effortless. She could iron a blouse in 5 minutes and it would look like she just bought it. Or, she could bake a pumpkin pie from scratch and use a real pumpkin! 

On my 21st birthday, Pat, and her best friend, Linnet, met me at a bar on Rush Street. I was thrilled to be out with these two smart beauties. I quietly had a ball watching the men trip over themselves with intimidation of them.

Over the years, we all went from the New Age to the New Testament of our Lord and Redeemer ~ all on our journeys as Born-Again Christians. 

I pray when I see Pat again she will not be thinking about ironing, nor her hair, nor lipstick because her White Robe will be spotless forever; those crowns will be arrayed perfectly on her Glorious head; and her lips will be singing Praises to our Lord and Savior forever and ever. 

I love you, Pat, and feel privileged to have known you.
