Mary Katherine “Kay” Piper was born in Elizabeth City, NC on November 18, 1941 to the late James C. Coffee Sr. and Catherine Powell Coffee. She is survived by her husband, Thomas G. Piper Sr., daughters - Diane P. Mizrachi, Amy Piper Mullins (Wes), son - Thomas G. Piper Jr. (Kelly), her grandchildren – Ashley Mullins (Steven Segura), Makenzie Mullins, Reagan Mullins, Nova Mizrachi, her step-grandchildren – Megan B. Williams (Robert), and Justin Bourgeois, her brother – James C. Coffee Jr., and extensive cousins, nieces, nephews, etc.
Kay grew up in the small South Georgia town of Pavo, and graduated high school at the early age of 16 to pursue her nursing degree. At the time of her graduation from nursing school, she was the youngest to do so in the state of South Carolina. She went on to obtain her degree as a CRNA - Nurse Anesthetist and completed her schooling at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, GA. Her first job was in Corbin, KY where she would meet her future husband of 55 years, Tom, at an A&W Root Beer stand. They eventually landed in Ocala, Florida, where they lived together for 33 years. There, she built a storied career as a Nurse Anesthetist and dedicated the rest of her time to raising her family. In their retired years, they purchased a beautiful home in sunny Las Vegas to be close with their daughter, Diane and their granddaughter, Nova. They loved to take scenic road trips throughout the USA, and frequently traveled to their condo in Daytona Beach, FL. They finally relocated to Tallahassee, FL in 2013 to be with their daughter, Amy & her family.
Kay’s greatest joy was being with her family and spending quality time whenever she could. She looked forward to her weekly Weight Watchers meetings, where she made many close friends and enjoyed being part of the community. She was an avid reader, with a curious mind for continuous learning. She loved collecting cookbooks and adding new recipes to her never-ending collection.
She enjoyed history, archaeology, UFO shows, and Bigfoot lore (yes, he's real!) - she adventured the world through her TV. She was an avid follower of the History Channel's "Expedition Unknown", where spent quality time with her TV boyfriend, Josh Gates. She was fond of getting out on Saturday mornings to hit up a few garage sales and find the best bargains available, a skill and hobby she passed on to many family members. She and her husband traveled throughout America and reveled in seeing all of the different parts of our country—but the best part of her travels was getting to make new friends along the way. She had an authentic personality and treasured every connection she made. She never met a stranger.
The family has asked for donations in lieu of flowers to the Wounded Warrior Project or Tunnels To Towers. Kay had a soft spot in her heart for our veterans.
