Mary was born on August 4, 1930 in Knoxville, Tennessee to Mrs. Helen T. Miller and Mr. Hoge D. Miller. She was raised in Knoxville with her two older brothers, Ed (James Edgar) and Daniel Hoge Miller. Ed married Mary Sue Beggs and they had a son named Dan Miller. Dan and his wife, Kim Miller, have three children who are Jackson, Natalie and Megan Miller.
Mary attended elementary and middle school education in Knoxville and graduated from Knoxville High School in 1948. Then, she attended the University of Tennessee and received a Bachelor of Arts in Education in 1952. While at UT, she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority and was the Vice President of the Alumni Club in 1956-1957.
Mary worked in the academic administration of the University of Tennessee for many years and then worked in the same capacity at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.
In 1964, Mary married Rev. Harry M. Middlebrooks, Sr. who was the son of A.M. Middlebrooks and Nelle B. Middlebrooks. His sister was Virginia Middlebrooks Roddenbery. Mary and Harry were married for 38 years until she became a widow in September 2002. They lived in Tallahassee, Florida while parenting two children named Harry Middlebrooks, Jr. and Helen Middlebrooks.
Mary was a longtime member of the Tallahassee Music Guild and she had a mutual enjoyment of music, especially church hymns, with her husband.
Mary was a docent at the Governor’s Mansion where she gave tours of the Florida room. Also, she really enjoyed a love of flowers and plants from her garden room inside to her beautiful garden outside. A porch was one of her favorite places to admire God’s gift of the peaceful serenity of nature.
