Mary Douglas "Duggie" Holton (Sullenberger) left this life to join with her heavenly Father on May 7, 2023. She was a strong woman who met life's adversities with grace and tenacity. Her family was of prime importance, and she was focused on them even in the last of her 99 years.
Duggie was born on February 28, 1924, in Knoxville, Tennessee, to Charles Presley Sullenberger and Viola Atchley Sullenberger. She moved to Tallahassee as a teenager where she graduated from Leon High School in 1941 and went on to graduate from Florida State College for Women in 1945.
She married in 1946 and eventually found herself in Michigan's Upper Peninsula where she raised five wonderful children, before returning to Tallahassee in 1977. She reunited with Joe Holton, a high school sweetheart, in 1986 and the two enjoyed a wonderful 22-year marriage until Joe's death in 2008.
Duggie was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph (Joe) Holton; parents Charles and Viola Sullenberger; brother, John Sullenberger; daughter, Rebecca "Becky" Holman; and granddaughter, Rebecca "Becca" Brady.
Duggie is survived by her sisters, Sara Waskom, Natchitoches, LA, and Elizabeth “Libby” Woodward (Johnny), Tallahassee, FL; her children, J. Michael Archibald, Tallahassee, FL; C. Stephen Archibald (Helen), Yulee, FL; Mary D. Crum, Glasgow, MT; and Kate Archibald Brady, Tallahassee, FL; 9 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews scattered around the world.
Mothers hold their children's hands for a while, but their hearts forever.
A graveside service will be held Monday, May 22, 2023 at 11am at MeadowWood Memorial Park, 700 Timberlane Road, Tallahassee, Florida 32312.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts be made to Big Bend Hospice.
