Maggie Samples Lassetter, age 92, passed away January 25, 2015, in Tallahassee, FL. The fifth of seven children, she was born February 25, 1922 in Villa Rica, GA, to Moses Monroe & Ethyl Boyd Samples who named her Pansy Magnolia. Miss Maggie was active in numerous civic and professional organizations. She was a member of the Baptist church, the Order of the Eastern Star, the Urban League and the Business and Professional Women’s Federation, and was recognized as the American Business Women’s Association’s Woman of the Year. In 1975 she was appointed by Governor Reubin Askew as the first woman member of the Florida Real Estate Commission, and served as its first woman chairman in 1977. She was state president of the Women’s Council of the Florida Association of Realtors, President of the Tallahassee Board of Realtors, and Director of both the National and Florida Associations of Realtors.
Maggie is preceded in death by her husband, James Green Lassetter, whom she always called Jimmie. She is survived by her children, Anne L. Rushing of Tallahassee, Lynn L. Maxwell of Sopchoppy, and James William (Michel Provencher) Lassetter of Waltham, MA, brother Darwin Samples of Newton, NC, and sister-in-law Marion L. Wilkinson of Manchester, TN. She also is survived by grandchildren Tanja R. (Stewart) Clendinen, Dacia L.(Raph) Maxwell-Hix, Brent E. (Amy) Maxwell), Heidi F. (Mark) Spivak, Misty (Tony) Provencher, Kyle (Kristin) Provencher, Jason (Robin) Provencher, Gabe (Beth) Provencher, Crystal P. (Mason) Murphy and Michelle Provencher, and twenty-five great-grandchildren. The family extends special thanks to her long time friend Bonnie King.
A memorial service and interment will be held at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Villa Rica, GA, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Big Bend Hospice or a charity of your choice.
