Lorraine Dey Summers, 70, passed away in Tallahassee, Florida, on November 14, 2017. She was born to Joseph William Dey and Hilda Ritchey Dey. She is predeceased by her husband F. William Summers. She is survived by her sister Deborah Rudd (Douglas) of Keystone Heights, Florida, and her brother William Dey (Ellen) of Danville, Virginia; three nieces and three nephews and many friends.
Lorraine grew up in Keystone Heights, Florida, and graduated from Keystone Heights High School. She graduated from Florida State University with a B.A. in history and a B.A. in library science and an M.S. in library science.
Lorraine had a long and distinguished professional career. First employed as Extension Director at the Gainesville Public Library; she then became Federal Projects Coordinator for the State Library of Florida. She was promoted to the Assistant State Librarian position from which she retired in 2001.
During her career, Lorraine received many honors and recognitions and served as a leader in the national, regional, and state library community. Among her achievements were service on the Council of the American Library Association, its governing body; President of the Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies of the American Library Association; President of the Southeastern Library Association; and as an officer and Board member of the Florida Library Association. She was a member of Beta Phi Mu Library Science Honor Society and a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 19, 2017 from 2-3pm at Pisgah United Methodist Church located at 7000 Pisgah Church Road, Tallahassee. The funeral service will follow at 3pm. Interment will be on Monday, November 20, 2017 at 12 noon at Keystone Heights Cemetery, Keystone Heights, Florida.
The family wishes to extend its appreciation to the nurses and staff of Capital Regional Medical Center for their compassionate care of our loved one. A special expression of appreciation is given to Sylvia and Ken Peacock for their devotion and support of the family.
