Laverne Pearson Davis departed this life at 11:30 AM on Monday, February 9, 2015 at Big Bend Hospice in Tallahassee, Florida—ending a passionate life of service as a Nurse Educator, a wife, a mother, a grandmother, and loving friend.
Laverne was born on December 26, 1932 in Pelham, Georgia to Cornelius and Bessie Pearson who preceded her in death. She was baptized into the Christian faith at Mt. Sinai Baptist in Jacksonville, Fla. and received her early education in the public schools of Mitchell County, Georgia.She graduated from Stanton High School in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1949.
Motivated to pursue nursing because of the early death of her beloved Aunt Rebecca, Laverne earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia in 1953. She went on to complete her Master’s degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder. It was during her college years that she became a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Mrs. Davis actualized her lifelong dream of training nurses upon joining the
faculty at the Florida A & M University School of Nursing in 1957. She served in that capacity for over 39 years—retiring in 1997.
She married Kenneth Curtis Davis, Jr. in 1959, and to this union one son was born. They spent many years together before Kenneth’s death in 2002. Having shared her life with so many, and having left a legacy for those who looked up to her, Laverne Pearson Davis leaves the following loved ones to celebrate her life and cherish her memory: Son, Daryl C. Davis (wife, Paula) of Melbourne, FL; Stepsons, Kenneth C. Davis, III
(wife, Renee) of Cinnaminson, New Jersey and William R. Davis of Atlanta, GA; two aunts, Lilly Pearl Wright of Daytona Beach, FL and Hattie Porter of Jacksonville, FL; Grandsons, James Davis and Phillip Davis; granddaughters, D’ Asha Davis, Ashanti Davis, and Maya Davis; a devoted cousin, Bettye O’Neal of Valdosta,GA; Goddaughters and Caregivers, Gail Green, and Deborah Reid and many other relatives and close friends.
Visitation will be held Thursday, February 12, at Culley’s Meadowwood Memorial Park, 700 Timberlane Rd. between the hours of 6 pm and 8 pm.
Funeral services will be held Friday, February 13, at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Truth Church,1110 Rich Bay Road, Havana, Florida, starting at 2 pm.
