Jimmy Wells was born in Magee, Mississippi to Earl and Delma Wells. He attended Magee High School where he played football, was a part of the student council, and was on the homecoming court. After graduation he continued his education at the University of Southern Mississippi as a business major. Before graduating from college, family circumstances led him back home and then to Jackson, Mississippi where he started working for the City Bus Lines. This career path eventually brought him to Tallahassee in 1966, where he worked for the Trailway Bus Station mounting and dismounting bus tires.
He would frequent a local restaurant during the work week where he met the love of his life, Alma Wells. Not wasting any time, they were married three months later and would spend the next 57 years of life by each other’s side. In 1976, he opened Jim Wells Tire Center on Thomasville Road with one goal in mind: treat everyone like family. This motto still rings true today, as his business continues to stay family-owned and operated, two generations later. Jim valued his customers and the lifelong friendships he built with many of them over the years.
He was an avid FSU football fan who loved spending his free time at Mexico Beach with family and friends. Jim was also a man of faith who dedicated each day to the Lord and led his children and grandchildren to do the same. Most of all – Jim was a family man. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather who never hesitated to put his loved ones first.
Jim will be remembered for his kind nature, selfless acts, and unbeatable sense of humor. “To know him was to love him”.
Jimmy is predeceased by his wife, Alma Wells, and his son, Darron Wells. He is survived by his daughter, Dawn Wells, his sister, Sadie Jones (Sonny) and his five grandchildren: Ashley Hudson (Alex), Jordan Crawford, Courtney Wells, Adam Crawford, and Luke Crawford.
A visitation will be held Sunday, October 1, 2023, at Fellowship Baptist Church on N. Monroe Street from 1:30 pm – 3 pm and a memorial service will follow immediately after.
In lieu of flowers, donations are asked to be made to the Fellowship Baptist Building Fund.
