James “Jim” Ayers, 77, of Tallahassee, FL passed away on September 27, 2021. Jim was born June 24th, 1944 at Camp Blanding Army Base in Starke, FL to Jennie Barton and Jesse Willard Ayers. He attended Leon High School and ran track as a varsity athlete. Jim graduated Leon in 1962 and went on to work as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service. After retiring from the Post Office, Jim spent time driving for Enterprise, cooking his famous “Herder Beans” and perfecting his BBQ.
Jim was an avid Seminole fan. He and his wife of 38 years, Judy, enjoyed many football weekends at the motorhome lot with their longtime friends. Jim also loved vacationing at the beach. He would spend the days, and some nights, fishing from the shore for what was sure to be fried up the next day.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Judy Ayers, son Mike, and his parents.
He is survived by his daughters, Amy Hanstein and Kim Whitten; sons, Jon Ayers and Jason Poppell; sister, Hilda Rivenbark Coursey; brother-in-law, E. Lynn McLarty; one granddaughter; six grandsons; and 1 great-granddaughter.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 15, 2021, at Calvary Chapel (8614 Mahan Drive Tallahassee, FL) with a visitation for family and friends beginning at 11am and the service following at noon.
