Mr. Whiddon was born in Stillmore, Georgia on October 28, 1917, to John Eli and Maybelle Newsome Whiddon.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Josephine Guilford Whiddon, five children: Jack G. Whiddon, Jr. (Marjorie) or Charleston, SC, Donald T. Whiddon (Beverly) of Tallahassee, Wade H. Whiddon (Stacy) of Lakeland, FL, Kathy W. Griffin (Randy) of Tallahassee, and Michael E. Whiddon (Sharon) of Clermont, FL, and nine grandchildren, Kimberly Nolte (Ron), Pinopolis, SC; Shelley Whiddon , Washington, DS; Nicholas Whiddon (Jess), Lakeland, FL; Robyn Mayer, Twin Cities, MN; Shannon Mayer, Twin Cities, MN; Jack Tully, III, Tallahassee; Robert Tully (Allison), Tallahassee; Michele Empric (Brian), Windemere, FL; Michael G. Whiddon, Mesa, AZ; five great-grandchildren, Kalen Nolte and Tharin Nolte, both of Pinopolis, SC, Aaden Whiddon. Lakeland, FL; Madeleine Empric and Davis Empric, both of Windemer, FL, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by grandson, Edward Kelly Whiddon , of Charleston, SC.
Mr. Whiddon moved with his family to Tallahassee around 1925. He graduated from Florida High School. In 1939, he met and married the love of his life, Josephine (Jo) Guilford. After several years of working for the railroad, he founded Automobile Glass Company with his brother-in-law, Arnold Eves, in 1945. Mr. Whiddon became sole owner in 1950 and renamed the business Whiddon Glass Company. He was active in its operation until his retirement. Mr. Whiddon served as a Leon County Commissioner from 1956 to 1976 and was a loyal servant of his constituents. He was also active in the North Florida Fair Association, serving on the Board of Directors for more than 50 years. He was a Life Member of the Tallahassee Elks Lodge 937 or the B.P.O.E., the Robert Butler Masonic Lodge F. & AM and Scottish Rite Bodies. After his retirement, Jack and Jo spent many days at their cottage on Alligator Point fishing, crabbing, shrimping, and pulling his net. They enjoyed the times shared with family and friends. Mr. Whiddon was a founding member of Wildwood Presbyterian Church, PCA, and served as an Elder and Elder Emeritus until his death.
Family will receive friends from 6 - 8 pm Friday, March 11, 2011 at Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home on Riggins Road. Funeral services will be held 10:00 am Saturday, March 12, 2011 at Wildwood Presbyterian Church, PCA, on Oxbottom Road . Interment will follow at Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Big Bend Hospice of Tallahassee or to Wildwood Presbyterian Church-Missions.
