Irene Edwards Maylan, 80, of Tallahassee, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, September 8, 2015 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah, Georgia. Irene was born October 23, 1934 in Pollard, Alabama to Jewell Mills and Henry Owens Edwards.
Irene graduated from T.R. Miller High School in Brewton, Alabama. She went on to complete her Bachelor of Arts at Judson College in Marion, Alabama and obtained her Master’s Degree in Social Work with a minor in Organ from Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. She worked as a Social Worker in Escambia County, Alabama and in child welfare services in Alabama until she and her husband, Geoffrey, were blessed with their daughter, Christine.
Irene attended First Baptist Church of Tallahassee for 45 years where she sang in the Joy Choir and was active in Women on Mission including past director. She was also a member of the Woman’s Club of Tallahassee for 30 years.
Irene is preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Arthur Geoffrey Maylan, and is survived by her daughter, Christine Maylan Freeman and her husband, Dale, and two grandchildren, Kennedy Jewell and Cole, all of Savannah, Georgia; and three cousins Ronald Forrest Mills of Panama City Beach, Florida; Jamianne Mills Lipscomb of Trussville, Alabama; and Lynn (Kenny) Crutchfield of Brewton, Alabama.
Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, September 13, 2015 at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 108 W. College Ave, Tallahassee, Florida with Dr. William Shiell officiating. Family will receive friends immediately following the ceremony at First Baptist Church. Burial will be held on Monday September 14 at 11 a.m. at Union Cemetery in Brewton, Alabama. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any remembrances be made to First Baptist Church of Tallahassee.
