Hubert “Hub” Chason, Jr., the owner who ran The Frame Shoppe in Governors Square Mall and another store of the same name by Whole Foods, died Saturday, September 10, 2022 of brain cancer. He was 64.
Since the early ‘80s, Chason framed original works of art, paintings, photographs, drawings and prints. He probably lost count of the number of college diplomas and degrees he mounted behind glass.
Besides his ability at business, the tall, strapping Chason was a gifted athlete. He served as quarterback on his high-school football team and center for the basketball team in Blountstown. He received basketball scholarships and played for Chipola Junior College in Marianna and Huntington College in Montgomery.
In his 40s, Chason teed off a golf ball on the first hole at The Capital City Country Club in Tallahassee. The ball traveled a great distance in the air and landed by the first hole on the putting green. The foursome putting on the first hole thought some rude person nearby had barreled into their game. When they saw Chason way off in the distance, their anger quickly turned into applause.
During his adult life, Chason became a world traveler. He went on a photo safari in South Africa, scuba dove the Great Barrier Reef off Australia, took many fishing expeditions in Alaska, trips to Hawaii, travels through the Canadian Rockies, a tour of ruins in Turkey, a visit through the Greek Isles and more. Chason loved the American West, especially Jackson Hole, Wy. and Yellowstone National Park. A phone call to a computer help center in Ireland would quickly turn into a conversation about the best pub in Dublin. The out-going, witty and quick-to-laugh Chason rarely met a stranger.
He married the lovely Lisa Francis, of Tallahassee, when he was 41. They married in a ceremony held on the state line of California and Nevada inside the Cal Neva Lodge on Lake Tahoe. Chason proved to be a very loving father. He treasured daughter, Ashley, doted on autistic son, Cullen, and took pride in musically gifted son, Hub “Hub Cub” Chason, III, who has played slide guitar with The North Mississippi Allstars, and many other bands.
He loved many things in life: Playing poker in a casino, smoking fine cigars, Jackson Browne concerts, anything made with huckleberries, Ted’s Montana Grill, frozen yogurt, steaks at Nicholson’s Farmhouse, Native American culture, anything written by Larry McMurtry, including “Lonesome Dove” and many other post-modern Westerns. Born on New Year’s Eve, there was always a party happening on Chason’s birthday.
Throughout his life, Chason remained close to his three sisters: Dr. Karen Chason, Charlene Fansler and Amy Lisa Hinson. He eagerly helped them by sniffing out the best auto deals, booking plane tickets, planning trips, lending moral support and advice. His generosity, kindness and knowledge will be missed by his sisters and many others. He is preceded in death by his parents, Lillian and Hubert Chason, who built a homestead on the shores of cypress tree-lined Page Pond in northern Calhoun County.
A visitation for Chason, Jr. will be held at Culley’s MeadowWood Funeral Home on Riggins Road on Wednesday, September 14 at 11am EST with the memorial service beginning at 12pm EST. A graveside service will follow at 3pm EST/ 2pm CST at New Shiloh Cemetery in Calhoun County on Highway 274 West, near Page Pond.
