Dr. Gertrude A. Williams, 90, was born on April 28, 1924 in Tuernitz, Austria. She died peacefully at home in Tallahassee on May 14, 2014. Survivors include her daughters, Jeannie LaVonne Downing and Sonja A. Hinton; 3 grandchildren, Isabelle T. Williams-Kalms, Tanja A. Hinton and Clark M. Trawick, and 3 great-grandchildren. Gertrude grew up in Austria, where she later was one of very few women studying medicine at the University of Vienna. Shortly after WWII, she met her future husband, Merl W. Williams, who was stationed in Vienna. After their marriage in 1950, she followed him to the United States, Japan and finally Germany.She practiced medicine in Munich and Bad Toelz, while raising her 2 daughters and later one of her granddaughters. After retiring in 1982, she devoted her time to traveling, visiting Tallahassee repeatedly before moving here in 2008. She enjoyed reading, classical music, working in her yard, and getting together with friends and family for celebrations and good times. She loved animals of all kinds, having surrounded herself with dogs and cats throughout her life. She considered Faith Lutheran Church and its members her church family. Friends will be received from 5-7 pm Friday at the Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home, Timberlane Chapel. Funeral services will be held 1:00 pm Saturday at Faith Lutheran Church with interment to follow in Culley's MeadowWood Memorial Park.
