Georgia was the sixth of nine children raised by Nicholas and Evangeline Tseckares, who left Greece for America and settled in Concord N.H. She grew up in Concord and later worked for the state of New Hampshire.
She married William N. “Bill” Thurston, also a New Hampshire native, in 1967. The couple, along with Mr. Thurston’s son Scott, relocated to Tallahassee while he pursued a Ph.D in History at Florida State University.
The couple grew to love their adopted hometown, and the move became permanent. Mrs. Thurston worked for several years at Premium Assignment Corp., and later in FSU’s financial aid office.
Georgia and Bill were members of the Gulf Wind chapter of the Railway Historical Society and participated in many group outings. They also traveled extensively to Europe, Alaska and the western U.S., as well as to periodic reunions of her big Greek family.
Georgia was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s dementia in 2013. The family is grateful for the care and love she received while living since 2015 in the memory care unit at Westminster Oaks, where she was a cheerful presence despite her advancing disease.
Georgia was preceded in passing by her husband Bill and six siblings: William, Rita, Aristides, Fredrick, Julia and Socrates. She is survived by her stepson, Scott (Karen) Thurston of San Diego; a sister, Virginia Soufleris of Tallahassee; a brother, Charles Tseckares of Boston; two grandsons; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews including Joy (Fr. Rob) O’Loughlin of Tallahassee.
Funeral services will be Jan. 5 at 11 a.m. at Holy Mother of God Greek Orthodox Church, followed by burial at Culley’s MeadowWood Memorial Park and a Makaria luncheon. Donations may be made to Holy Mother of God Greek Orthodox Church, 1645 Phillips Road, Tallahassee FL 32308.
