Gene Tunney Bevins, a retired mechanic and truck driver at Ford Motor Company of Detroit, Michigan; passed away at the age of 92 after a battle with cancer while at the Big Bend Hospice House on Thursday, January 16, 2020, in Tallahassee, FL.
He was born in Goody, Kentucky to Johnny C. Bevins and Lucy R. Bevins on September 20, 1927. He was a faithful son and loving brother to his ten siblings. He served his country by joining the army and fighting in World War II from 1945-1947. After returning from war he married his childhood sweetheart Mary Louis (Freeman) Bevins. They soon moved to Detroit, Michigan where he would work for 30 years at Ford Motor Company, and faithfully served as a Deacon while at First Baptist Church of Melvindale and then at Wick Road Baptist Church. After retiring from Ford Motor Company he and his wife retired to Pass Christian, Mississippi. Where they lived for 31 years. He was a faithful servant at First Baptist Church of Long Beach, Ms. where he served as a Deacon and worked in the Food Pantry. He had a love for people and a desire for them to know his Savior and Lord Jesus Christ. In 2009 he and his beloved wife Mary moved to Tallahassee, Florida to be closer to family. He was a member of City Church of Tallahassee, FL. He enjoyed life and his smile was contagious. You could not be around him and not feel better. He also enjoyed watching Seminole Baseball.
Gene Bevins was preceded in death by; his father and mother, sisters Anita Sue Bevins, Margaret A. Hinkle, June E. Bloodworth, Peggy J. Stanley, brother Charles E. Bevins, daughter Kathy Lynn Bevins and his beloved wife Mary Louise (Freeman) Bevins of 66 years.
He is survived by his daughter Belinda Gene Hurst and Granddaughter Venessa Lynn Hurst; brothers J. Arnold Bevins, Paul D. Bevins, Glen A. Bevins, and sister Linda L. Calvert, 14 nieces, 11 nephews, too many great nephews and nieces to count, and his little dog Rascal, who will miss him dearly.
Graveside interment will be held at the Tallahassee National Cemetery at 2 pm on February 7, 2020, followed by a memorial service at Culley’s MeadowWood Funeral home at 4 pm, the family will receive friends an hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may by made to City Church Tallahassee or Big Bend Hospice.
