Edward “Burt” Killebrew, age 81, passed away in the comfort of his home on Sunday, August 28. He was born in Lakeland, Florida, on September 11, 1940, to the late Sam and Barbara (Bishop) Killebrew. Burt was affectionately known as “Mr. K” to his students and mentees.
After graduating from Vanderbilt University in 1962, Burt delved into social work before finding his true calling as an educator. His passion for education and mentoring touched hundreds of lives during and after his time working as a teacher at W.T. Moore Elementary School in Tallahassee, starting in 1968. Teachers, parents, and students fondly remember Burt as a firm but an incredibly fair educator who could reach anyone who was struggling and in need of guidance, kindness, or reassurance.
Even though he retired in 1993 after over 25 years of teaching elementary students, Burt still felt driven to help underprivileged youth find meaning in their lives. He dedicated 27 more years to volunteering at W.T. Moore’s after-school program. During that time, Burt continued to mentor students who needed his help. When he wasn’t serving the Tallahassee community in and around the school he so loved, Burt enjoyed reading classic literature, communing with nature, cooking gourmet foods in his home, and spending time with his beloved tuxedo cat, Charley. Burt particularly cherished opera, classical, flamenco, and jazz music.
As a culinary arts enthusiast, Burt enjoyed dining at local Tallahassee staples with his close friends. He forged many meaningful, deep friendships because of his generosity, warmth, and gentle spirit. He was known for his quick wit and infectious sense of humor, able to make anyone laugh with his hijinks. Burt is survived by his abundance of lifelong friends and chosen family who will never forget his immeasurable presence in their lives. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to express their condolences are encouraged to donate to the Big Bend Hospice Foundation in memory of Burt.
