Douglas Harold Starr, 71, of Mt Pleasant, Florida, passed away after a courageous fight against prostate cancer. A memorial service will be held at the Tallahassee National Cemetery in Tallahassee, FL with full military honors.
Born in Detroit, Michigan at Holy Cross Hospital on May 26, 1951, to Harold (Starosta) and Joann (Sypitkowski) Starr. He attended St Elizabeth Grade/High School, Eastern Michigan University, Walsh College, and Macomb Community College. He served in the Army and was honorably discharged in 1971. He was a member of St Mark parish of Warren, MI where he resided for 20 years before moving to Davenport, FL in 1995. After moving to Mt Pleasant, FL in 2005, he became a member of Holy Cross parish in Chattahoochee, FL until it closed in March 2021. While living in Mt Pleasant, his favorite pastime was attending auctions and watching the wildlife. He was also a very proud volunteer member of the Valor Team group for veterans within Big Bend Hospice in Tallahassee. He also participated in the Honor Flight for veterans to Washington, DC.
Douglas worked for Chrysler Motors before changing careers and becoming a database administrator for 30+ years. He traveled the country as a contractor working at many large corporations and, state and federal agencies. He loved his work.
Douglas was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2000 and had surgery at ORMC in Orlando, FL. In 2001 he had radiation therapy in Tallahassee and was regularly monitored but had a relapse after the death of his wife, Susanne, in 2010. He was a participating member of the Tallahassee transplant support group until the death of his long-time wife, Susanne, who was a kidney transplant patient. Susanne died from HNPCC.
Douglas is survived by one daughter Brandy Starr; three granddaughters, Alyssa, Kaitlyn, Emily; one great-grandson, Eli;one surviving sister Cindy Newell (Starr), St Clair Shores, MI; preceding him in death were Harold Starr, father; Joann MacDonald, mother; Gary Starr, brother; and Susanne Starr, loving partner of 41 years and wife for 37 years.
Memorial contributions may be made to any veteran support group or the Valor Team of Big Bend Hospice in Tallahassee, FL.
