Douglas T Johnson, 83, of Tallahassee, FL died Sunday, (6/10/2018) at Big Bend Hospice House. A native of Cherokee, Iowa he grew up in the area and graduated from Wilson High School. From Iowa he relocated to Ft. Myers, FL and then in the early 1980’s moved to Tallahassee where he worked for the State of Florida Department of Education until his retirement. Doug taught in public education in the Lincoln Central Public Schools in Dolliver, IA and the Lee County Public Schools in Ft. Myers before taking a position with the Department of Education.
Doug enjoyed being with people and socializing. He was quick with a laugh and light hearted attitude. He enjoyed playing tennis and particularly spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Doug served at the U.S. Air Force Stations in French Morocco, North Africa and Minot, North Dakota.
Honors received by Doug include the Pro Deo Et Patria (highest church award), Distributive Education Clubs of America Hall of Fame, Honorary Life member of the Distributive Education Clubs of America, and the Eagles Dare to Achieve Award.
Doug was preceded in death by his mother: Edna Schmidt; father: Theodore Johnson, stepmother: Bernice Weise Johnson; sister: Sandra Jean Johnson; and son: Steven Douglas Johnson.
Survivors include his wife: Pamela Ann Johnson; two children: Wade (Dr. Laura Rosner) Johnson, Melanie (Clayton) Sembler; seven grandchildren: Seth and Noah Johnson; Luke, Cade, Tadd, Rose and Shaw Sembler; siblings: Ann Meylor, Ted (Carol) Johnson, and Don (Sandy) Johnson.
