Doris Jean Lanham peacefully passed away on Friday, October 18, 2012 in Tallahassee, Florida.
Born in Central City, Kentucky, on September 28, 1924, Doris was a long time Tallahassee resident. Part of the post-war migration, she and her late husband, Gary Lanham, settled in Tallahassee in 1958. They were the successful co-owners of the Tallahassee Barber College, a technical school that was located in the Old Parkway Shopping Center, as well as a second Barber College in Miami, Florida.
Doris was a bright, strong willed woman, who loved and protected her family as well as her friends. Those who truly knew Doris recognized her compassion and her great love of literature, which she bestowed upon her children. She had a strong commitment to keeping her extended family together, and will be sorely missed by those loved ones spread across the country.
Doris was a loving, supportive wife, a thoughtful mother and an adoring grandmother and great- grandmother. She is survived by her children, Judy Begue and her husband Joe, Don Lanham and his wife Gayle, and Gary Lee Lanham and his previous wife, Lethie. There are also four grandchildren, Lisa and Charley Begue, Heather Lanham (daughter of Don and Gayle) and Jason Lanham (son of Gary Lee and Lethie), and two great-grandchildren, Mac and John Carey.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gary in 1987.
A graveside memorial service will take place on Friday, October 26th at 11:00 a.m. at Roselawn Cemetery, located off of Piedmont Drive. For those that so desire, donations can be made in lieu of flowers to America's Second Harvest of the Big Bend, 110 Four Points Way, Tallahassee, Florida 32305, a favorite of the many charities that Doris supported.
