He was the third child of Reverend and Mrs. W.T. Johnson of Columbus, GA, who preceded him in death. He was a member of Evangel Assembly of God Church in Tallahassee, and a member of North Highland Assembly of God Church while living in Columbus, GA.
Visitation will be held at Culley's Meadowwood Funeral Home, Riggins Road, Tallahassee, FL, Thursday, May 5, 2011, 6:00-8:00 p.m. There will be a graveside service, Saturday, May 7, 2011, 2:00 p.m., at Parkhill Cemetery, Macon Road, Columbus, GA.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Geraldine B. "Gerry" Johnson, his only son Dewey E. "Bill" Johnson, Jr., and wife, Shannon of Tallahassee, FL, granddaughter, Ginger Veitinger and husband, Kevin of Savannah, GA, two grandsons, Anthony Johnson and William Johnson of Tallahassee, FL, great-grandson, Jordan Veitinger and great-granddaughter, Sydney Veitinger of Savannah, GA. He also leaves behind a host of extended family and friends, all of whom he cared about deeply.
Bill was born and raised in Columbus, GA. He graduated from Jordan Vocational High School in 1943, and attended Emory University until enlisting in the U.S. Navy. He proudly served his country aboard the U.S.S. Colorado during World War II. After his military service he returned to Columbus where he went to work for Eastern Airlines. He retired from EAL after 35 years of devoted service. After retirement, Bill enjoyed working part-time at Adventures in Travel in Tallahassee, FL. Bill was known for his faith in God, his integrity and fierce loyalty to his family & friends. He loved working in his yard, and writing poetry. People who knew him best will remember his sharp wit, and dry sense of humor.
