Clara Gwendolyn Philbeck Morrow (Gwen), of Tallahassee, passed away on April 7, 2015. Gwen was a native of Shelby, NC and a longtime resident of Tallahassee, FL. She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Bill Morrow (in November 2000), her son-in-law, Doug Stowell , and by her four siblings.
She is survived by her three daughters, Nan Stowell, Gwenn (Glenn) Thomas, and Lynn Morrow. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Lani (Kendall) Howell, Will (Samantha) Oven, Anna (Scott) Lindner, Cindy (Jamey) Compton and Leanne (Andrew) Dickhute; six great grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Sara Jean Wainwright; and a special niece, Paula Brown Bandt.
Gwen first moved to Tallahassee in 1939 to attend Florida State College for Women (now FSU). Gwen taught at Leon High School until Bill graduated from FSU and became a career Air Force officer. Gwen returned to Tallahassee upon Bill’s retirement in 1971 and was an active member of Killearn United Methodist Church, the Killearn Ladies Association, Retired Officers Wives Association, and Highlands United Methodist Church in NC.
Gwen and Bill spent their last 26 summers together in Highlands, NC and Gwen spent an additional 5 summers in Highlands after Bill’s passing.
Gwen was an extraordinary grandmother. She enjoyed taking her grandchildren on camping trips and to Highlands every summer for a month. Her grandchildren all have precious memories of the special times they spent with “Mom and Pa”, as Gwen and Bill were affectionately known by all.
Everyone who knew Gwen will remember her beautiful smile, her endearing personality, her quick wit and sense of humor. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
