Lowell was born March 17, 1935 in Orlando where he lived prior to attending the University of Florida. He received his undergraduate degree in Chemistry prior to attending the University of Miami for Medical School. Upon graduation Lowell interned at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. After his internship he transferred to Denver General Hospital in Colorado to begin his Residency in Internal Medicine. He subsequently transferred back to Miami and completed his Residency at Jackson Hospital and in his final year of Residency, he devoted time to the specialty of Rheumatology and Rheumatic Diseases, a specialty that he had been interested in since medical school.
Equipped to provide exceptional care, Lowell moved to Sarasota where he opened a private practice specializing in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology.
After two years of private practice, Lowell was drafted into the U.S. Army Medical Corp during the Vietnam War. He was assigned to Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii where he spent 27 months. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Sarasota and re-opened his private practice. During this time, he also worked as a Clinical Investigator for numerous pharmaceutical companies.
For health reasons at age 51, Lowell closed his private practice and accepted a position as a Senior Physician for the Florida Department of Health in Tallahassee. During his tenure with the State of Florida he also worked as the Medical Executive Director for the Florida Department of Corrections, Senior Physician for the office of Disability Determinations and Senior Physician for the Florida State Hospital. He retired in April of 1996.
After retirement, Lowell spent time doing the things he loved. He was an avid golfer, a voracious reader, a natural historian and a staunch supporter of Gator Football. He loved his family dearly and took much joy in spending time with them traveling the world. His greatest joy in life, was the loving relationship he had with his granddaughter, Shannon.
Lowell is survived by his daughter, Carole Duncanson and her husband Harry; his son, Gary and his wife Teresa and his granddaughter, Shannon Duncanson.
A memorial service will be held 3pm on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at Culley’s MeadowWood Funeral Home -700 Timberlane Road- Tallahassee.
