William Robert “Bill” Lewis, Jr., age 81 of Tallahassee, FL, passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2013 at 8:19 pm with his family at his side. Bill was the devoted husband of 58 years to his wife, Elizabeth F. “Betty” Lewis and father of four: Lynn (& Bill) James of Tallahassee, FL; Nancy (& Kerry) Fabor of Burlington, NC; Barbara (& Len) Bradley of Holly Springs, NC; and Robert W. (& Tammy) Lewis of Houston, TX. He is survived by his sister, Carolyn Tufts of Draper, UT. Bill leaves behind eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Bill was born on September 21, 1931, to William and Hilda Lewis. He grew up in Ossining, NY and graduated from Ossining High School. He later attended Cornell University and served in the U.S. Navy as a pilot.
Bill started his professional career in the travel industry with Mohawk Airlines and Irish Air Lines in New York, NY. He became Director of World Wide Travel for AAA East Florida Division and later, AAA Auto Club of the South. He was very active in the travel industry and was an active member or the SKAL Club. After retiring from AAA, Bill concluded his career with Brendon Tours. Bill‘s career enabled him and Betty to pursue their passion for travel, exploring new places and experiencing other cultures.
Bill and Betty retired to Tallahassee, FL in 2004. He stayed active by enjoying golf, serving as the President of the Greens of Killearn Home Owners Association and was a member of the “SLUGS”, a prestigious senior golf group at Killearn Country Club. Bill will be remembered by all as a devoted husband, a wonderful father and a great friend to many.
A Memorial service will be held Monday, March 11, 2013 at 11:00 am at Culley Funeral Home on Riggins Road in Tallahassee, FL. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Big Bend Hospice of Tallahassee, FL or any other charitable organization. Bill’s ashes will be interned this summer alongside his family at the Dale Cemetery in Ossining, NY.
