Mitchell Thompson, or Mitch to his many family and friends, was born on March 27th, 1956 in Lumberton, NC, the son of Ronald and Ada (Hardin) Hensley. The family consisted of his brothers, Brad, Daniel, Jay, and his sister, Lisa. They relocated to the Eldon area and here is where Mitch and his family called home. He attended Lane school and Tahlequah High School. He always had a love of music and played the drums with local artists, mainly the country and the gospel musicians. His favorite song was “Phone In Heaven”. Mitch loved the view from his own front porch and the people he knew all of his lifetime. He burst into the room like a ray of sunshine and you couldn’t help but smile. He never sat down, he never tired of helping others, and he adored the family he was blessed to call his own, from his wife Cherry Hummingbird that he married on April 6th, 1977, to his three children and eleven grandchildren. Mitch considered himself blessed. He worked building fences, the best handyman around, and the man that could make it work again! He was always in the company of his canine companions and usually tore the sleeves off his shirts to indicate work as usual being done. If the sleeves remained on, there was something special in the days activities. If he had his way, he wanted coffee on the porch while watching the grand and great grandchildren gathered in the yard, this was heaven for Mitch. A Christian by faith, he attended Proctor Church in Proctor, OK. The Lord called this good and faithful servant home from his many labors on September 13th, 2022 in Tahlequah, OK, surrounded by the family he loved and adored. He was 66 years old and will be greatly missed.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents, his mother and father, one son, Mitchell Thompson Jr., one brother Jay Locklear and his mother and father-in-law, Johnny and Susie (Cochran) Hummingbird.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Cherry Hummingbird-Thompson of the home and their children, Gwen Davidson of Proctor and Christina Chastain of Tahlequah. He leaves two brothers and one sister, Brad Locklear of Woodall, Daniel Thompson of Tahlequah and Lisa Smith and husband Darrell of Eldon Hill, OK. He lives on in his twelve grandchildren, Shawn Rose of Westville, OK, Dalton (Zeke) Rose of Pryor, Carl (Mo) Rose of Pryor, OK, Shane (Gunnie) Davidson and wife Jasmine of Westville, OK, Uriah Chastain and wife Ashleigh of Westville, OK, Kyler Chastain of Wagoner, OK, Dustin Cole Chastain of Wagoner, OK, Lucas Chastain of Wagoner, OK, Mitchell Thompson III of Westville, OK, Kimberly Nelson and husband Alex of Tulsa, OK, Kriston Moon of Fayetteville, AR and Kydan Thompson of Enid, OK. He also leaves 16 great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends and loved ones too numerous to mention.
