Funeral services for Mary Jane Grimmett-Edwards will be held on Tuesday, December 1st, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Reed-Culver Chapel with Reverend DJ McCarter officiating. Mary Jane Grimmett-Edwards was born on January 4th, 1936 in Tahlequah, OK, the daughter of Ellis and Ollie (Pigeon) Grimmett. Mary graduated from the Chilocco Indian Boarding School for Women on May 25th, 1955. It was following her graduation she met Delbert Edwards, the two married on January 30th, 1957 in Tahlequah, OK. Delbert and Mary raised a family of three children, Phillis Kay, Johnny Dale, and Eric Wayne. The family resided in the Tailholt Community until Delbert’s passing on March 8th, 1982. Mary began her working career at the Tahlequah High School as the J.O.M. Supervisor, then later, at the Sequoyah Elementary School as Librarian Assistant. She referred to the students as “all of her kids”and always spoke of how much she loved helping them. After 20 years of employment, Mary retired from the public School system in 2001 due to a decline in her health. When Mary wasn’t working, she enjoyed Elvis Presley gospel music, fishing at her favorite places, going to stomp dances at Stokes, taking long drives up highway 10, spending the day with her family, spoiling her grandchildren, and watching them play sports. Mary always said that two of her favorite moments in life were getting to go to Graceland with her daughter’s family, and traveling to Branson to watch Andy Williams in person. Mary was loved by many and will be deeply missed.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Delbert, her beloved son, Johnny Dale Edwards, two brothers, Richard and Thomas Grimmett, and three nephews, Chester “Scooter” Grimmett, Darren Grimmett, and DeWayne Grimmett.
Mary is survived two children, her daughter, Phillis Bluebird and husband William of the home, and one son, Eric Grimmett of Tailholt. OK. She leaves one sister and two brothers, Juanita Webb and husband Harold of Welling, OK, Charles Grimmett of Barber, OK, and Turner Grimmett of Vian, OK. Her legacy lives on in her four grandchildren, Brittany Bluebird of Tahlequah, OK, Laney Rozell of Bentonville, AR, Dillon Bluebird of Tahlequah, OK, and Cole Grimmett of Stilwell, OK. She leaves two great grandchildren, Emma Berbee of Tahlequah, OK, and Macallister Hendrickson of Bentonville, AR. Her nieces and nephews include Kenneth Grimmett, Vincent Pendleton, Michael Webb, James Webb and wife Tera, Joseph Webb and wife Stephanie, Donna Tiger, Devonna Grimmett, Diana Davis and husband Jim, Debra Mosby, and Kelly Littledave and husband Luciean, as well as many cousins and a host of friends and loved ones.
