Margaret “Lucille” Hair, also known as “Winnie”,95, passed from this life at 6:50pm on October 11th, 2012 , surrounded by her family and friends in her home. Lucille was born on April 2nd, 1917 in Tahlequah, OK to James L. and Lizzie (Wilson) Chair. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Zeke Hair in 1977, her sister Hester Guess, and four sons, Baby Boy Hair, Bennie Dreadfulwater, James “Chooch” Hair, and Raymond “Babe” Hair. Surviving her are children Jody Dreadfulwater “Yo-Ni”, Wynona “Chicken” Dreadfulwater, Athena “Squirty” Hair, and Clara “Puddin” Rhyne. Also surviving are 66 grandchildren, great grandkids, and great- great grandkids. Winnie was a full blood Cherokee Indian, fluent in the language. She enjoyed reading, writing, speaking and singing in Cherokee. After she completed her 8th grade education at the age of 14, she became an active member of the Women’s Missionary Union (WMU). She quilted with the other women to raise funds for missions. She served as secretary and treasurer for the WMU at her home church, Cedar Tree Baptist Church. She faithfully attended church and followed the Lord all of her life. In 1948, she became a Sequoyah Indian Weaver. She wove beautiful, one of a kind, afghans and wall hangings on looms until the age of 93 , when she decided to stop. For her weaving, she was designated a National Treasure of the Cherokee Nation. Lucille was full of life and wisdom to the end, and truly had the heart of a servant. She enjoyed being out doors, a good fire, working hard, cooking, and being surrounded by her family and the sound of their laughter. Her greatest joy was seeing her family in church. Friends may visit with the Family of Winnie on Sunday, October 14th, 2012 at Reed-Culver Funeral Home from 5:30 pm until 8:00 pm. Her life will be celebrated on Monday, October 15, 2012 at 11:00 am at Cedar Tree Baptist Church with Reverend Dale Wilson officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Tree Cemetery in Briggs, OK.
