Maggie Elizabeth Rogers or “Beth” as she was known to most, entered this life on July 19, 1936 in Thomas, OK. The daughter of Wesley and Mary (Helter) Essex she was one of two daughters to bless the home. Along life’s journey she met the love of her life Harry “Rick” Rogers and joined their lives together on September 21, 1954 in her home town of Thomas. Beth and Rick were blessed with two children of their own; one son Steven and a daughter Sandy. Beth was very busy throughout her life, having a servant’s heart she joined and was very active in several organizations, such as the Women’s League of Voters, the Tough Love program for troubled youth, and the Cookson Mission. She had a passion for helping others and was always willing to lend a hand where ever she was needed. Beth and her husband enjoyed a relaxing evening underwater, scuba diving the lakes, or teaching someone else how to safely take in the serenity this passed time offers. As long as she was spending time with Rick it was a good day. She didn’t limit her help to just her two legged friends, she had a real soft spot for our for legged fury friends as well. In 2001, a friend in her church, Doris Herrin, invited Beth to a Humane Society of Cherokee County meeting. Both ladies lived in Cookson and were troubled by the large number of stray animals abandoned in the area. Beth and Doris together began rescuing dogs and cats. The Humane Society of Cherokee County was only a year old when Beth joined, but she remained an active member for twenty years. Beth was president of the organization three terms, fostered dogs at her home, and she and her husband, Rick, adopted many animals over the years. Beth also dedicated many years to fundraising events for the Humane Society. In 2008, the Humane Society opened a resale shop in Tahlequah. Beth was named manager and continued her work in the shop until her death. She will always be remembered fondly for her big heart and selfless efforts in rescuing, fostering, and finding homes for unwanted animals. This beautiful lady, that spent her life serving others, received her rest on July 23, 2021 in Tahlequah, OK at the age of 85. Beth will be dearly missed by her husband, family, and friends, as well as, the animals she cared for so lovingly.
