Lila Mae Rock was born on May 31st, 1923 in Locust Grove, OK, the daughter of Ketcher and Maggie (Stopp) Rock. She had one brother and one sister, Blue and Elsie. Lila was a homemaker. She loved being in her home providing for her family. She was a quiet, gentle woman, who kept her family in line while displaying a sense of humor and a touch of fun. She spent her time quilting, working in the garden, raising everything from lettuce to green onions. She was a very good cook, and you were always offered a bowl of her beans, accompanied by her famous biscuits, fried potatoes, and on the holidays, her famous kanuche and her special corn meal balls. She was a member of the New Hope Indian Baptist Church, and loved the old Gospel sing-a-longs. She was a Christian by faith, clinging to her faith to get her family and herself through to another day. Lila always spoke Cherokee at home and seldom spoke English. She was very proud of her heritage, and counted herself blessed to travel to North Carolina. It was here she saw the Keetoowah Mound her father had spoken of so often. She attended the Stokes-Smith Ceremonial grounds and attended stomps every chance she got. She raised her son and her niece, devoted to every aspect of their lives. She loved her family dearly and kept the door open to all the family who needed her love and council. Her health began to fail her and Lila moved to the Cherokee County Nursing Center. She passed from this life on Monday, May 11th, 2015 in Tahlequah, OK, with her loved ones close by her side. She was 91 years old. The world has been a sweeter place for all the love she gave and the home she made for her family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her mother, her father, her brother Blue in 1999, and her grandparents.
Those left to cherish her memory and her advice include her son, LeDon Rock and his companion, Nancy Sue Proctor of Tahlequah, OK. She leaves her sister and best friend, Elsie Rock, one niece and close friend, Genora Rock and one nephew Daniel Helvy, all of Tahlequah, OK. Her legacy lives on in her two grandchildren, Jacob and Clayton Rock, six great grandchildren, four great great grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends and loved ones.
