Allender “Bubby” Otis Scott II was born on March 6, 1944, in Tulsa, OK, the son of Allender and Martha “Marty” Scott. He grew up in Tahlequah, Oklahoma with his three siblings. He attended Tahlequah High School, where he played football and met the love of his life, Cheryll (Cook) Scott. He graduated from high school in 1962 and then earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from Oklahoma University in 1968.
Al and Cheryll were married on September 2, 1966, at First Presbyterian Church in Tahlequah. Together they raised three children. Al was a devoted husband, father, brother, neighbor, and friend. He always made time to play with his children and grandchildren. Some of his daughters’ favorite childhood memories with their Dad include long bike rides to the school playground, playing “kick the can” until dark with all the neighborhood kids, and swimming in their grandmother’s pool.
Al worked 44 years as a nuclear engineer. In 1968, he moved with his bride to Idaho Falls, ID where he worked 14 years at the Idaho National Engineering Lab. In 1982, Al and his family moved to Kansas where he worked 30 years at Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corporation. He retired from Wolf Creek on February 29, 2012.
He was a devoted Christian and used his adult life to make a difference. He was a long-time member and elder of Town and Country Christian Church. In 1987, Al found his calling as a volunteer in prison ministry through Prison Fellowship. Over the years, he led weekly Bible studies and Sunday morning services at the Topeka Correctional Facility. He also started and grew a flourishing prison ministry team at his church. In the last eight years, he served as a mentor to male parolees through the Kansas Out4Life program. Because of Al, many inmates learned about the love of Jesus.
Al was a giant, loving kid at heart who lived life to the fullest. His authentic and friendly demeanor made people feel at ease when they were with him. In his spare time, Al enjoyed quiet moments at home drinking coffee, talking with Cheryll and visiting their grandkids. His youngest grandkids loved it when he would play “monster” and his older grandsons enjoyed challenging him to arm wrestling matches. He made an indelible impression on each of their lives.
In 2016, Al was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer and Stage III melanoma, which later progressed to Stage IV melanoma. Years of exercise and physical discipline allowed him to live longer than the doctors ever expected, thus earning him the nickname “Miracle Man.” Even while undergoing chemotherapy, Al remained active in his church and prison ministry. His family enjoyed many sweet memories with him that they will cherish forever. After four years of fighting cancer, Al went home to be with the Lord on Monday, June 8, 2020. He was surrounded by his family at the Midland Care Hospice House.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Cheryll; daughters, Anjanette and husband Chris Hauserman, Shawna and husband Daniel Parks, and Susan and husband Josh Hollander; eight grandchildren, Brandon and wife Lauren Scott, Kale and Luke Hauserman, Kaitlin and Levi Parks, and Ava, Lucy and Macie Hollander; his sisters, Carol Jane Plummer and Jackie Woolbright; and his brother, Stephen Scott.
