Mary Catherine Hitt, age 70, a resident of Taft, Texas passed away Tuesday, July 6, 2010 in Taft. Mary was born on August 27, 1939 in Trousdale County, Tennessee to William Filson and Catherine Sercy Filson. Mrs. Hitt was the secretary for Electrolux Appliance Company in Tennessee. Later in life, she was the manager for Porta Del Sol RV Park, Corpus Christi, Texas. Mary attended the First United Methodist Church and Country Bible Church, Taft. She was passionate about the care and well-being of animals. Mrs. Hitt was well known in the Taft community for her extensive collection of dolls, teddy bears and collectible plates.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Sherwood D. Hitt of Taft; son, Leslie V. Hitt of Taft; brother, Robert G. (Dee) Filson of Springfield, Tennessee; three sisters, Sue Filson of Madison, Tennessee, Jewell Lowery of Hendersonville, Tennessee and Juanita Edison of Goodlettsville, Tennessee; three nieces and two nephews.
Public visitation will take place on Friday, July 9, 2010 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Colonial Funeral Home Chapel with the family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 10, 2010 at the First United Methodist Church, 302 McIntyre Avenue, Taft, with Pastor Larry Mayo and Rev. Melissa Nelson officiating. Due to weather conditions, burial will take place in Taft at the Taft Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date.
Active pallbearers will be Mike Shedd, Roger McCune, Steve Simms, Ernest “Bubba” Syma, Paul Hitt and Larry Hitt.
