after struggling for many years with Parkinson’s and Dementia. He leaves his beloved
wife of 58 years Antoinette (Toni) Fleig, daughters Erin Fleig (partner Christopher Mills)
and Toni Anne Johnson (Joseph). His son William Peter Fleig predeceased him in 1987.
Bill leaves his brother Peter Harold Fleig (Jeanette) and nieces Emilie Fisher-Fleig (Bryce)
and Helena Miller-Fleig (Doug) all residing in California. He also leaves his three cousins,
Raymond and Dick Scheurer and Carol Kurtis.
Bill graduated from Brooklyn Polytechnic University in 1953 and worked as an
Electrical Engineer for Kollsman Instruments, Sperry and Lockheed Martin with the
majority of his career focused on avionic and electro-optic systems for air and space
defense. He became Director of Marketing at Lockheed Martin toward the end of his
career which involved extensive travel that he continued to enjoy after retirement with his
family.
In 2001 when Bill retired, he volunteered to teach math at MercyFirst in Syosset, a
Catholic home and high school for children in foster care. Soon after he was offered a
salaried teaching position and became a mentor to the first student in the school’s history
to pass the New York State Board of Regents in Physics. He was also active in the Church
of St. Dominic as a Baptism Minister.
A devoted husband and father, Bill enjoyed sharing his knowledge and interests,
which were many, with those around him: a skilled craftsman, an avid historian of World
War II and old movies, an opera lover, a sailor, a skier, and a weight training enthusiast.
He was a natural educator with a keen sense of humor and will be dearly missed by his
family. Your prayers for Bill will be greatly appreciated.
Services will be private at Beney Funeral Home in Syosset followed by a mass in
the Church of St. Dominic in Oyster Bay with Interment at Holy Rood Cemetery in
Westbury. A link to view the services online will be provided by the family.
