Lisa Hohenfeld
Lisa Hohenfeld of Syosset, NY, passed away on January 5, 2017. She was born in Bremen, Germany in 1930. She was the daughter of the late Albert Knickelbein and Louise Zimmerman Knickelbein, and the wife of the late Bruno Hohenfeld. Lisa was a homemaker who loved being with her family. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed crocheting, knitting, walking with her dog, swimming, and being with friends. She grew up in Germany during World War II and remembered sheltering in the basement while the city was being bombed. She met her future husband, Bruno Hohenfeld, at a dance when she was eighteen. They lost contact when she contracted tuberculosis at age nineteen - at a time before there were antibiotics. While battling tuberculosis, Lisa lived in a sanitorium where she recovered after a year of treatment. After she returned home, she met Bruno again by chance when they were both riding bicycles over the opposite sides of a bridge. She married Bruno Hohenfeld in 1954, and they were married for forty-six years. They had two daughters, born in 1954 and 1956. In 1958, the family emigrated to America on the SS United States. Lisa took care of the girls, while Bruno worked in a factory in New Jersey. Lisa and Bruno attended English language classes to learn the language. When her husband was unable to work for a period due to an old foot injury, Lisa went to work in the factory. Bruno built a house in Trenton, NJ, and the family lived there for a few years. They then moved to NY where Bruno became a caretaker for an estate. These were very happy years, filled with time outdoors, going to the beach, and enjoying family and friends get togethers. In addition to her parents and husband, Lisa was also preceded in death by two brothers, Heinz Knickelbein and Helmut Knickelbein; and a sister, Marga Nehren. She is survived by two daughters: Ute Breese of Johnson City, TN, and Norma Burns and husband Neal of Syosset, NY; three grandsons, Keith Burns and wife Heather, of Levittown, NY; Christopher Tramutola, of Brooklyn, NY; and Bryan Breese and wife Kim of Nashville, TN. Two great granddaughters: Kelsey Burns and Alexandra Burns of Levittown, NY; and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by four step-grandchildren: Linda Sullins of Johnson City, TN; John Breese, Jr. and wife Laura of Ashburn, VA; Charles Breese and wife Sue of Windsor, CT; and Edward Breese and wife Moira of Holbrook, NY. The celebration of Life service for Mrs. Hohenfeld will be held at the Beney Funeral Home, 79 Berry Hill Road, Syosset, NY 11791 on Sunday, January 8th, 2017.
