Robert Earl Mitchell of Tupelo, Mississippi passed away on Friday, November 25, 2022 at the age of 93. He was born on May 30th, 1929 to Arthur and Lula Mae Mitchell of McKenzie, Alabama. He grew up on a farm in south Alabama as the 9th of 11 children.
After graduating from Greenville High School in 1947, he went to college and trained to become a gospel preacher attending David Lipscomb College and Montgomery Bible School. While preaching in Hollins, Alabama, he met and fell for the love of his life, Margaret Ann Johnson, while boarding with her grandparents. Earl and Ann were married on August 2, 1954, and one year later started a family.
Brother Mitchell went on to preach the gospel of Christ for over 60 years in Alabama and Mississippi. He later served as an elder with the Northeast Church of Christ in Tupelo. Along the way, they made many friends and co-workers in the kingdom there and at Bald Hill, Mississippi, as well as in Hollins, Sylacauga, Tuscaloosa, Montgomery, Sterrett, Vernon, and Harpersville, Alabama. His greatest pride was in working in the Kingdom of God with all his might.
Earl is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Margaret Ann Johnson Mitchell / Sister: Bertha Welch / Children: Deb Mitchell Coleman (Jon), Sherry Mitchell Buzbee (Bill), Scott Lee Mitchell (Leanna), Scott & Barbara Doles / Grandchildren: Teresa Vick Chandler (Chris), Jayme Erin Buzbee Anderson, Carrie Ann Barnett (Ray), Jonathan Doles, Jackson Charles Mitchell, and McKenzie Ann Mitchell. Great-Grandchildren: Kailee Vick, Ian Chandler, Tyler Vick, Duncan Chandler, Angelina Walker, Leigha Anderson, Natalie Vick, and James Clark “JC” Anderson. He is preceded in death by his loving parents and grandparents, his beloved grandson, Lauren Johnny Vick III, and nine (9) siblings.
The family would like to thank his local church family at Northeast Church of Christ for the constant encouragement, calls, cards, visits, and especially prayers. We are also thankful for the wonderful health care he received at North Mississippi Medical Center. Doctors Ricky Parker, Jimmy Johnson, Joe Johnsey, Jeb Williams, and Jaime Ungo were kind, professional, and caring healthcare providers, extending our father’s life and comfort in his final days. The team of caregivers at the Courtyards Community Living Center in Fulton, MS have shown great care and love for both Dad and Mom. We are forever grateful.
The funeral service is to be performed at Curtis and Son Funeral Home in Sylacauga, AL. on Thursday, December 1, 2022. Visitation will be from 10-11AM and service to begin at 11AM. Graveside service to
follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
