It is with great sadness, but also much gratitude for her long healthy life, that the family of Theresa Agnes McPherson announce her passing at the age of 90 on June 12, 2023 in Sydney, Nova Scotia.
Theresa is survived by her children from her former marriage to Joe MacNeil: Nancy (Darryl), Bobby (Linda), Norma, Juanita, Raymond, and Ambrose. She was the matriarch of a large family that included 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren who she loved and adored. Theresa was predeceased by her son Joe “Little Joe”, her daughter Debbie, and her loving companion John Rooth.
Born March 23, 1933, Theresa was the daughter of Paddy and Kate McPherson of New Waterford. She is survived by her sister and life-long friend, Sister Marie McPherson, and was predeceased by four sisters and six brothers.
Theresa was a mother to all. She raised eight children of her own and lovingly cared for an additional six foster children. She was kind and generous throughout her life, offering a meal and a place to stay to everyone who visited her home. Helping others made her happy and she was a proud palliative care volunteer. Above all, Theresa loved people - especially children.
Theresa was a quirky and incredibly resourceful character, often assembling unique outfits for occasions from what was readily available - including recycle bags, tablecloths, and men’s suits. The sky was the limit. She was an imaginative artist and creator, who loved painting and sewing. No odd job was beyond Theresa’s competence or ambition and her home became a delightful expression of her creativity. She especially loved music, dancing and karaoke. She made friends wherever she went and had an infectious laugh and a grateful spirit. She enjoyed many hours socializing and singing along with the entertainers on the Sydney boardwalk. Theresa was a member of the Elks Club, Branch 12 and Ashby Legions and Club 55 where she earned the nickname “bullseye” as a dart player.
The family would like to sincerely thank all staff at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for the compassionate and caring support they provided to Theresa and her family.
A memorial service and celebration of her incredible life will be held on Sunday, August 6th from 2-4pm at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel at 755 George Street, Sydney.
