Stan was born on March 14, 1940 and raised on Forbes Court in Sydney. He was always pleased to meet and reminisce with fellow “Northenders”.
Stan was equally proud of his connection to Irish Cove where he spent almost every summer of his life. He was happiest in “IC”, whether boating on the Bras d'Or or quietly reading a book; standing calmly in the water or teaching children how to dive off John R's rock; snowmobiling in winter or snorkelling in the summer, or simply enjoying a Gin & Tonic on the veranda as the best sunset in the world unfolded in front of him. He loved the people of Irish Cove, his Campbell and Cash relatives and all the friends that make it such a special place.
More important than all the natural wonders and fun activities, Irish Cove was where Stan met the love of his life. While hanging out with the Cash brothers, Stan fell for their sister Margaret and a love story began that would last for over 60 years.
The new couple spent that summer attending square dances and kept dancing for the rest of their time together. They stayed in touch by mail while Margaret went to Toronto to further her nursing education and Stan to St. Fx and then on to Dalhousie Law School.
They were married in 1964 and settled in Sydney where they raised their family.
Stan practised law with the firm of Burchell, Sullivan, Smith and Campbell until being appointed Crown Prosecutor in 1974 and then a judge of the Provincial Court of Nova Scotia in 1979. Stan smiled when his siblings and friends teasingly addressed him as “Your Honour”, he was very proud of his work but was a modest man unimpressed by titles.
Stan retired from full time duties in 1997. His family has been delighted to hear many stories over the years from people who appeared in Stan`s court. They told how Stan's calm, kind approach to the law led to fair decisions that had significant positive impacts during troubled times in their lives.
A couple of years ago, Stan and his son were walking in Petersfield Park and met a local lawyer who knew Stan well. They exchanged some stories and laughs and Stan continued on his way. The lawyer called out to Stan's son to return and quietly told him ''Your Dad is one of the good ones, one of the really good ones.''
Stan and Marg moved to Irish Cove year-round after retirement. They were active members of the community as volunteers at the Johnstown Milling Frolic and the Seniors Club. Stan delighted in being co-owner with his dear friend Charlie Cash of a 1950s Farmall Cub tractor.
Stan and Marg also spent many winters in the small town of Mexico Beach on the Florida Panhandle. Stan took up golf and adored the incredible beach at his front door. He and Margaret made another group of friends from all over Canada and the USA. They also travelled to Australia, Japan, Scotland, Ireland, and the Czech Republic.
Stan was a wonderful father to his children Catherine and Tom, quietly supporting them in everything they did, and a loving, devoted grandfather to Angus, Maggie, and Juliette who treasured spending time with their Grandpa.
Stanley is survived by his wife Margaret (Cash), his son Tom and wife Pam, his grandchildren Angus, Maggie, and Juliette, siblings Helen (John Alec) and Brian and in-laws Charlie (Marie), Frankie (Kay), Elizabeth (Francis) and Andrea.
