It is with heartfelt sadness that we, the family of Ron Anthony Abbass, share the news of his passing on Sunday, September 25th at Hospice Cape Breton in Membertou. Born and raised on Townsend St. in Sydney, Ron was the eldest son of the late George Anthony Abbass and Sandra (Corey) Abbass. In his early years, Ron was employed by the Nova Scotia Liquor Commission and later returned to school, attending St. F.X. University in Antigonish, where he earned his Education degree. He taught school in Sydney and eventually relocated to Halifax, where he spent the majority of his teaching career. Upon his retirement, Ron returned to Sydney where he enjoyed his summers swimming and soaking up the sun at his favourite beach, Groves Point. Along with swimming, Ron was dedicated to his daily fitness routine and could always be found at the gym “pumping iron” as he would say. Truth-seeking was another of Ron’s passions. In his later years, he became a student and dedicated follower of the Bible and his faith ran deep. He loved all genres of music, especially those songs whose lyrics had a profound impact on him. Ron’s strong presence and witty sense of humour will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew and loved him. The family would like to thank Dr. Saneea Abboud and Dr. Peter Poulos for their care and kindness. A special thank you to Dr. Anne Frances D’Intino and the amazing Staff and Volunteers at Hospice Cape Breton for their care, compassion and comfort, not only to Ron, but to our entire family. Ron is survived by his daughter and only child Sandra (Paul McNamara & daughter Abigail) Ottawa, ON., four brothers, Melvin, Dean (Chrissy) and Anson, all of Sydney, and Leo, Fredericton NB, as well as several nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Ron was predeceased by his step-mother Agnes (MacMillan) Abbass, his daughter Sandra’s mother Louise (Murray) Parsons and a sister-in-law Diane Stephens. At Ron’s request, a private family burial will take place. Those wishing to offer condolences to the family, may do so on Monday, Oct 3rd between 2:30pm and 4:30pm at the Cedars Club, 30 MacKenzie St. in Sydney. Donations in Ron’s memory can be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County, Loaves and Fishes or the Salvation Army. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family by visiting www.twcurry.com.
