It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Patrick John Delaney, age 85, who died peacefully at home in Sydney.
Pat was born on March 9, 1939 in Sydney. He was the youngest son of the late Martin and Josephine (Dawson) Delaney.
Pat was a well know musician in Cape Breton. A renowned saxophone player who later transitioned to the bass. He played with many different bands over the years including The Lancers, Spain and The Beaumonts. Pat felt music to his core and was a self taught musician learning to play by ear and feeling.
Pat was known to be on the “ways and means committee” and was always building, fixing, creating or inventing, including building a special car for his grandchildren, fondly called the Candy Car. Pop made every visit with his grandchildren special and had a unique relationship with each one of them, encouraging their individual interests with love, enthusiasm and support.
Pat spent many summers with his family at their bungalow out on the Mira, playing horseshoes, spending hours sailing, and playing music at the many different gatherings with friends and family in Grand Mira South.
Pat worked at the Sydney Steel Plant for many years until just before it closed. He then worked for the Cape Breton Regional Housing as a maintenance man until his retirement at the age of 67.
Pat was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by the love of his life of 59 years, Myrna (Ley), his son Mark (DeeAnna Moreau) and his daughter, JoAnn (Barry) Locke. He also leaves behind his 4 grandchildren Charlie Delaney, Connor Delaney, Brayden Locke and Keagan Locke. He is also survived by his brother Joe,and inlaws; Cecelia Delaney, Debbie (Dave) Mullins, Florence Sampson, Diane MacInnis, Brian Ley, Alice Ley and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Pat was predeceased by his brothers Marty, Gerald, Ron, and Jim; sisters Mary Tobin, Theresa Smith, Aggie MacIntyre, Jean MacLeod, and Margie Healey; in-laws Ruth Delaney, Margaret Delaney, Marie Delaney, William Tobin, Ted Smith, Marty MacIntyre, Hugh MacLeod, Earl Healey, Marion and Bernie Ley, Mary and Alex Ley, Evelyn and Tommy Oakley, Donnie Ley, Gord and Dorothy Ley, Tonya Ley, Bill Ley, Frank Sampson.
