It is with deep sadness that we, the family, announce the sudden passing of Patricia Suzanne Spearns after a short but courageous battle with cancer. Pat passed away peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on March 14, 2021.
Born September 14, 1939 in Sydney, Pat was the daughter of Gregory and Margaret (Stapleton) Spearns. Pat overcame the many challenges of childhood polio and at the young age of 16 became governess to Alexander Graham Bell’s Great Grandchildren, spending summers in Baddeck and winters in Maryland. At age 23 Pat moved to Halifax and began a career with MT&T eventually moving back home to Cape Breton where she continued to work for the company retiring after 29 years as a proud “Pioneer Life Member”.
Pat dedicated her life to her family, friends, and Faith. She played an active role in the lives of her nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews and loved her family unconditionally. The last few years she especially enjoyed the companionship of her nieces Darlene and Marie, whether it be watching Little House on the Prairie reruns or laughing at Trump on CNN. Pat will be remembered by her family and friends for her sense of humor and genuine laughter, she will be sincerely missed.
Pat is survived by her sister Elaine (Spearns) Goodyear, the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by brothers Donnie, Gregory and Billy, sisters Peggy Langley and Irene MacAskill.
A special thank you to her amazing neighbors and friends on Xavier Drive where she resided, and to the wonderful staff on 4C at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
