Born in South West Ridge, Mabou, NS, on May 15, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Finlay and Anna Belle (Chisholm) MacKillop.
She entered the Congregation of Notre Dame in 1933 and made profession in August, 1935. Upon profession, Sister Margaret began what would be a lengthy career as a high school teacher, ministering for 23 years in the Sydney area. She then served as principal and local community leader for the next 6 years in St. John’s convent, New Glasgow. After several years as Provincial Bursar for the Congregation, Margaret returned to the classroom, teaching in Iona and Mabou. Upon retirement from the school system Margaret began a “second” career in Religious Education and Pastoral Ministry which took her to Larry’s River, NS, Evansburg AB, Chatham, NB, Sydney Mines and Mabou. During those many years, Margaret proved herself to be an excellent teacher and administrator, as well as a dedicated member of her religious congregation.
In 2009, Sister Margaret moved to our assisted living facility at Holy Redeemer Convent, Whitney Pier. In 2011, her health declining, Margaret entered the CND Health Care Center, where she continued her ministry of prayer for the dedicated care givers who so lovingly ministered to her. To all of them we are deeply grateful.
Sister Margaret was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her sister, Lillian, CND, and her brothers Alex Rory, Duncan and Colin. She is survived by several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews whom she loved dearly.
Visitation for Sister Margaret will be held in St. Mary’s Church, Mabou, Tuesday, February 28, at 1:00 p.m. Liturgy of Christian burial will take place at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Bernard MacDonald officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery, Mabou.
