Sister St. James Maureen
It is with deep regret that we the sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame announce the passing of Sister Margaret Burke on December 22, 2020 at the CND Health Centre in Sydney. Sr. Margaret touched the hearts of all she met and will be remembered for her gentle and giving spirit.
Sr. Margaret was born on October 22, 1924 in Glace Bay, she was a daughter of the late James and Katherine (Smith) Burke.
She entered the Congregation of Notre Dame in 1941, and was professed in 1943. She began her teaching career in Newcastle, NB and continued teaching in various schools in Sydney, and New Glasgow. Sr. Margaret participated in various rolls in the CND community including local leader of St. John’s Convent in New Glasgow, local leader at St. Martin’s Convent, New Victoria, bursar at CND Novitiate, Lanark, bursar and local leader Notre Dame Convent, PE, and various other ministries.
In 2011 she moved to Parkland, Sydney where she resided until her health declined. In 2018 she moved to the CND Health Center.
Sr. Margaret was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by sisters, Theresa and Janette (John Neil) MacLellan and brothers, Daniel, James (Violet) and Raymond (Marilyn). She is survived by numerous loving nieces and nephews.
Sr. Margaret was a deeply faithful woman who walked humbly with God.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Tuesday, December 29 at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church with Fr. Bill Burke officiating. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
