Joseph Kelly Age 91 Sydney, NS
We sadly announce Joseph's passing on April 10, 2015 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney. Born in Castletownshend, County Cork, Ireland in 1924, one of seven children of John and Brigid (O'Flaherty) Kelly. Joe grew up in Ireland, leaving at the age of 14 to become a radioman on ships in the merchant navy during WW2. He went on to marry and emigrated to Montreal, where he lived and worked as an engineer at Marconi and eventually an entrepreneur/inventor. He is a graduate of Concordia University where he studied at night while working full time with two young children. Joe loved poetry, history, his roots and his garden, especially his potatoes. He has had an impact on the many fortunate people who have had the pleasure to know him. "Poppa Joe" is survived by his wife of 61 years Maureen (Butler) Kelly, son Sean and daughter Tara (Tim) Milburn, and grand-children Ellie, Joe and Brigid Milburn. Also brother Tony (Nora) Kelly, nephew Martin (Stephanie), nieces Paula (Daire) and Clare (Gavin) and their children in Dublin, Ireland and sister Marie McGeeney in London, UK and many other nieces and nephews across the world including Europe, California and Australia.
Special thanks to Dr. Murdoch Smith, and caregivers Dorothy MacLellan, Cindy Budden and VON who were a great comfort to the family through Joe's health challenges. A mass at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, April 16 will be held at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church, Sydney with Rev. Bill Burke officiating. A reception will follow at the house.
