Sister Helen MacPhee, formerly S.S.Helen Theresa, a Sister of the Congregation of Notre Dame, died at the CND Health Care Center on March 10, 2023 in her 64th year of religious life.
Helen was born in Sydney, NS on November 23, 1937, the daughter of the late Francis and Clothilda (Bruce) MacPhee. She entered the Congregation of Notre Dame in 1956 and made First Vows in 1958.
Sister Helen began her teaching career in Quebec, continuing in New Glasgow, Port Hood, Judique, Antigonish, Baddeck, New Waterford, New Victoria and Sydney. She also served in various capacities in the parishes of Innisfail, AB, Truro, Iona, Larry’s River and Mabou.
In her retirement years Sister Helen resided at Parkland Cape Breton. In 2016 she moved to the CND Health Care Centre where she focused on intercessory prayer and personal presence.
Sister Helen was a gifted artist who shared her talents graciously with students, friends, and family. Helen’s deep connection with nature had a life-long impact in providing her with a sense of connection, vibrancy and awe.
Helen was predeceased by brothers, Daniel (Mary Lou), John; sisters, Florence (Nick MacDonald), and brother-in-law Barney MacNeil. She is survived by brother Francis; sisters Marie MacNeil, Mary (William) Fraser, Monica (Gordon) Wambolt, Peggy and Sally (Raymond) Hooper; and sister in law, Joan. Helen will also be remembered lovingly by her many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held, 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. on Thursday March 16 at TW Curry Parkview Chapel. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. on March 16 at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church with Fr. Bill Burke officiating. The service will be livestreamed for those unable to attend in person on T. W. Curry Parkview Chapel facebook page. Interment of ashes at Holy Cross Cemetery at a later date.
