Gertrude Mae Moore, 87, of Sydney, died Saturday, August 29th at the Cove where she was a resident for the last several months. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Nigel and Mamie (Shebib) Holbeche. Upon completing high school in business, Gertie went right to work doing bookkeeping for Rogers Hardware. After her marriage to John Moore she took on the job of wife and mother. She put her heart and soul into taking care of her husband, four boys and her in-laws. Everything she did was with kindness, honesty and integrity. Gertie’s pride and joy were her four boys. She happily and lovingly devoted her whole life to her husband and her children. Gertie placed tremendous emphasis on education and supported the boys through their school years, university studies and adult lives. Pictures of her sons and all the grandchildren were always on display around her house and gave her such joy. Gertie’s generosity and kind heart were extended to everyone. She looked after many of her Aunts and Uncles in their later years, ensuring them a good quality of life. She did numerous taxes for her family and friends, and she was very involved with the well being of her neighbours - bringing them food, filling in government forms, groceries or just companionship. She touched a lot of people’s lives in a very positive way and she was adored by everyone who knew her. Gertie was the ideal grandmother. She loved all her grandchildren and was always so happy to hear from them, give advice and be part of their lives. The best part for them was not only her wisdom but her stories. She loved to tell stories of when she was a young girl and all the adventures with her siblings. Stories of her grandparents and family always kept the kids laughing no matter how many times she told them. These memories will be cherished and held warmly for many years. People who knew her cannot think about her without remembering her cooking. Gertie was cooking all the time and her freezer was always full of her baking treats. If you went to her house, the tea pot was put on the stove and the food started flowing. I think everyone who knew her can remember a good homecooked meal, fabulous desserts and very full tummies. Gertie is survived by: her four sons, Bernie (Elaine) of Edmonton AB, Bill (Madonna) of Sydney, Barry (Anne) of Burlington ON and Blaise (Terressa) of Calgary AB; her Grandchildren. Dan Moore, Sheena Wheadon, Nicole Cameron, Brenda Moore, Kevin Moore, Barry Moore Jr., Joshua Moore, Christopher Moore, Breanna Moore and step grandchildren, Carol Stretch McBee, Scott Stretch and Mark Stretch. Her great grandchildren, Easton, Seth, Grace and Clark Cameron and James (JJ)Wheadon; her Siblings, Ellen Rose (Charles) of Sydney, Evelyn Waye (Joe) of Sydney, Diane Murchison of Lower Sackville, Nigel Holbeche of Orillia ON, and George Holbeche (Sharon) of Oakville ON. She was predeceased by her husband John Moore, and her sisters Dorothy Collins, Rose Parsons and Betty Rayburn. The family gives a special thank you to staff of Williston House and The Cove, and Bill and Madonna Moore for the last few years of special attention. As well, friendship and long-term support from her sister Ellen and cousin Lilly Yhard will always be remembered and appreciated by the family.
