It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Betty Somers. Betty passed away on Monday, February 6, 2017, surrounded by her family.The daughter of the late Percy and Leah (Hines) Lordly, Betty was born in 1936 and raised in Sydney, NS. A dedicated nurse for 40 years, she was a graduate of Victoria General Hospital, City of London (England) Maternity Hospital, and Dalhousie University and was a Clinical Instructor at St. Martha’s Hospital. She was a Public Health Nurse in Halifax as well as a VON nurse for the Cape Breton region until she devoted her career to the Case Room at St. Rita’s Hospital, Sydney. She raised her five children in Sydney with unconditional love and devotion. Betty was a genuine, lovely woman, parent and friend, with sparkling eyes and a smile that warmed your heart. She was a voracious reader and could often be found with either a great book, or The New York Times Crossword puzzle, and a hot cup of tea. She loved staying active and was notorious for her daily walks. Her grandchildren brought her great joy, and she never missed the chance to watch their sporting and school events. She spent her last remaining years being cared for by her loving son, Danny, who treated her like royalty. She is survived by her sons Bill (Nancy) Somers, Dartmouth and Dan Somers, Sydney; daughters Bertha (Gary) Moore, Dartmouth; Jenny (Gary) MacLeod and Leah (Mark) Voutier, Sydney. Nana/Ninny is also survived by 7 grandchildren, whom she adored; Caitlan, Jessica and Gary MacLeod, Erin and Billy Somers, Andrew and Leah Moore; sister Mary Lou Van Den Broek; brother Winston (Donna) Lordly and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her late husband William Somers, brother Eric Lordly, sisters Helen (Bob) Stevens and Josephine Lordly, and nephew Peter Van Den Broek.Visitation for Mrs. Somers will be held one hour before the funeral service which will take place at 11 am on Friday, February 10, 2017 at T.W.Curry Parkview Chapel with Fr.
