Sister Catherine Vickers died peacefully on Thursday, July 30, 2015, at the CND Health Care Centre, Sydney.
Born in Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia, on October 1, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Garnet and Mary (Keigan) Vickers.
Catherine entered the Congregation of Notre Dame in 1943 and made profession in August, 1945. For the next two years Catherine taught elementary school in Sherbrooke, Quebec, before returning to her home province. In 1947 she was appointed to St. John’s Convent, New Glasgow, where for the next twenty years she earned the distinction of being the beloved grade two teacher. She loved the children as much as they loved her. While in New Glasgow she also served in the local parish church as sacristan.
In 1967 Catherine moved to Sydney where she accepted the position of Bursar and supervisor of housekeeping services at Holy Angels Convent. During her years there, Catherine’s gentle manner and quick wit endeared her to the employees both in the convent and in the High School.
In 2008, her health failing, Sister Catherine moved to our assisted living facility at Holy Redeemer Convent, and, in 2009 she entered our CND Health Care Centre. Throughout the years of her declining health, Catherine continued her ministry of prayer for the many people she encountered during her years as a CND. She, especially prayed each day for the staff at the Health Care Center, who so lovingly cared for her.
Catherine was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by one sister, Elizabeth, and by brothers Theodore, Harold, Garnet and Herbert. She is survived by sisters-in-law Wilma Vickers, Bras d’Or, and Lorraine, British Columbia and by several nieces and nephews.
Visitation for Sister Catherine will be held Sunday, Aug. 2, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at
T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney, with Bible Vigil at 7:30 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 2:00 pm., Monday at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church, Sydney, with Rev. Bill Burke officiating. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
