Born on August 10th, 1922, to Mary and Angus McIntyre, Kay was a woman of love, faith, and family. She grew up in in Sydney, NS. She went on to meet the love of her life, at just 16 years old, ‘Cal’, through her ‘dancing days’, in Boisdale. They spent many years writing love letters back and forth, to then fall in love and live a beautiful life together. She had two children, five grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. She worked in several roles within the Sydney Police Department; secretary for the detective’s unit, court Stenographer, and then on to be known as Cape Breton’s first ‘Policewoman’ after being encouraged by co-workers due to the need of a female presence for the female prisoners. She served 29 years (1958-1987) with the Department.
She is pre-deceased by her husband, ‘Cal’ Allan Michael O’Handley, grandparents of both sides and her loving daughter, Karen Rogers, who cared for her mother, alongside her husband, Keith, for over 30 years. She is survived by her son Charlie (Jean) O’Handley, son in-law Keith Rogers, Grandchildren, Jennifer (Gary Sweet) O’Handley, Ryan (Tatum) O’Handley, Bryce (Ally) Rogers, Amy (Jon) Cains and Shannon (Shannon) MacDonald, her name’s sake, as well as Great Grandchildren, Kolby, Brianna, Hannah, Maelle, Julia, Sophie, Maddy, Trent, Jakub, and Ceilidh, as well as numerous loving nieces and nephews.
