90 – Victoria Mines
Alex Oleksa Melnyk, 90 of Victoria Mines, passed away on Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Wasal and Pauline (Yakimchuk) Melnyk of Victoria Mines. He was a devoted member of Holy Ghost Ukrainian parish, Whitney Pier and St. Alphonsus parish, Victoria Mines. He worked for 50 years with Sydney Steel. He was a devoted family man and a pillar to his community in many ways. He will be sadly missed for his kind and gentle nature by all who knew him.
He is survived by his daughter Augusta (Jackie) MacDonald, Baddeck; son Michael (Cheryl) Melnyk, Antigonish; grandson Scott (Cheryl) MacDonald, Middle River and his pride and joy, great grandchildren Zoe Catherine MacDonald and Logan Alexander MacDonald.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Veronica; brother Sander, sister Katie, step-father Michael Hasiuk and daughter-in-law Claire.
Visitation for the late Mr. Melnyk will take place at T.W.Curry Parkview Chapel on Friday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. with the Panachyda Service at 7:30 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Holy Ghost Ukrainian Church with Fr. Roman Dusanowskyj officiating. Burial at St. Alphonsus Parish Cemetery at a later date.
