It is with saddened hearts that we, the family of Agnes ‘Aggie’ MacNeil announce the peaceful passing of our dear, sweet mom, into her well-deserved eternal glory on Friday, Feb. 11, 2011, at Harbourstone Soldiers Cove, where she resided for the past three years taken care of by beautiful angels.
Born July 25, 1918, in Fogo Island, N.L., she was the eldest child of the late Pierce and Alice Lynch.
She immigrated to Cape Breton in 1942 where she met and married her late husband, Neil W. MacNeil from Benacadie Pond.
Mom was a very caring, loving woman who always put others before herself. She was a longtime member of St. Theresa’s CWL, an active member of St. Rita’s Hosptial Womens’ Auxiliary. For many years, she canvassed for the Heart & Stroke Foundation and the Cancer Society. She was a member of the Cursillo Movement and Blue Army. She always made herself available to assist friends and neighbours in need of help for a sick or elderly loved one.
Her enjoyment throughout 55 years was meeting with her ‘club members’ every Tuesday night for a good game of 45s or auction and meeting with her friends on Lorne Street for their weekly games of cards.
Mom’s children blessed her with 19 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren who ‘Nan’ cherished and they loved her unconditionally. Mom’s numerous nieces and nephews looked up to her like she was a ‘queen’.
Agnes is survived by daughters, Bonnie Peck (Kevin), Sydney, Marg Koski (Roger), Sudbuy, Ont., Elizabeth Young (George), Sydney, Angela Calder (Jack), Howie Center; son, Neil (Clare); sister, Margaret McKenna, Fogo Island, N.L.; sister-in-law, Dolena Bennett (Bill); brothers-in-law, Marcie MacNeil (Evelyn), Alec MacNeil (Kathy); daughters-in-law, Patsy Kendrick, Natalie MacNeil; and special friend, Shirley Christmas.
Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by daughters, Madelyn MacDonald (1996), Carol Rankin (2009) and Joan in infancy, sons, John (2005), Pierce (2010), sisters, Bridgette Butts, Grace Squires, Liza McKenna, Marie Alice, Irene Bernadette, brothers, Tom and Bill Lynch.
Visitation will take place Tuesday, Feb. 15 at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Theresa’s Church with Fr. Jim Oliver presiding. Burial in St. Theresa’s Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or St. Theresa’s Cemetery.
Online condolences may be sent to twcurry.com.
Return home to heaven,
Sweet mother dear,
Your work is done, completed here.
Sweet memories of you cemented in our hearts,
Will live forever, although we’re apart.
We thank God for you through our tears,
For your many beautiful, love-filled years,
You were loved the most like no other
Our angel, our friend, our beautiful mother.
